Queens of Pop vs Lesser Bitches

It is difficult to declare an artist as being the absolute Queen of Pop. Each artist that has been referred to as "the Queen of Pop" has something unique that sets them apart from less influential artists. True "Queens of Pop" last for years because the press and the public use them as the standard of comparison.

The term "Queen of Pop" in the Minds of Stans

The misinformed tweens and qweens who perpetuate stan wars fail to realize that you can't just declare your favorite to be the Queen of Pop and hope that everyone catches on. The term "Queen of Pop" is like "fetch". Just because you say it over and over doesn't mean it's ever going to happen. While it is okay to believe in your heart that your favorite artist is your Queen of Pop, most stans refuse to accept that their limited views of popularity and impact don't reflect the views of the general public. Some stans are not secure enough to like their favorite artists unless they can find a way to position their favorite as being above every other artist. Because of this, lots of assaults, shankings, and pistol-whippings have been committed during arguments over which female is the true Queen of Pop.

Popularity vs. Respect: "Queen of Pop" in the Minds of the General Public

As record sales decline and social media rises, the concept of fame, talent, and pop culture impact has become diluted. The line between "pop culture figure" and "iconic figure" is blurred because every hood rat with a webcam and a Twitter account has stans. The key components of being a true Queen of Pop is commercial impact and cultural impact. All artists that have been referred to as the "Queen of Pop", achieved that title not just through record sales, but through cultural influence. Lots of artists have become famous, made hit records and then faded away; but the Queens of Pop have managed to ingrain their names, images and music in the minds of people who may not even be fans of pop music.

Before proclaiming your favorite to be "the Queen of Pop" ask yourself these questions and answer honestly:

  • Do people who don't listen to pop radio/or watch pop music videos know who my favorite artist is?
  • Do people who don't stalk Billboard and iTunes know who my favorite is?
  • In the general public (not on the Internet) what exactly is my favorite artist known for?
  • Is my favorite artist a household name (Do old White people in Iowa know who my favorite is)?
