The Illuminati/Freemasons (in the context of reality and history) are two separate organizations with a tenuous connection to each other.

-
The Illuminati/Freemasons (in the context of conspiracy theorists and ignorant Black people with internet connections) is a group of celebrities and world leaders who are plotting to take over the world using Kanye West videos.

==Historical Background==

-
Contrary to what you have heard (or chosen to believe) the Illuminati and the Freemasons are not one and the same. The original Illuminati was a Bavarian organization that encouraged freethought (thinking based on logic and reason as opposed to laws and religious doctrines). The original Illuminati fell under sharp scrutiny because it is very difficult to control people who aren't afraid of government laws or religious dogma. It is even more difficult to control groups of people who want to think for themselves ''and'' meet in secret (which is why it was illegal for large groups of slaves to congregate without their masters supervising.) Consequently, in 1777 the ruler of Bavaria, Karl Theodor banned all secret societies including the Illuminati. However, according to conspiracy theories the Illuminati never broke up and survived until today. They argue that many of the world's events are being controlled by the lluminati, although it was never proven that the original Illuminati ever controlled any world events.

According to actual Freemasons, [http://altreligion.about.com/od/controversymisconception/a/freemason.htm Freemasonry is not a religion nor a substitute for God, Jesus, or any higher power] (there are Christian Freemasons, Jewish Freemasons, Muslim Freemasons, etc) Freemasons have no political affiliations, nor a unifying worldwide network. There is no evidence that either the original Illuminati, nor current Freemasons have participated in Satanic rituals.

There's plenty of literature which talks about Freemason symbols, why Freemasons meet in secret, what they are, and what they aren't (I would suggest [http://www.dummies.com/store/product/Freemasons-For-Dummies.productCd-0764597965.html Freemasons for Dummies]). You don't have to believe any of it but I've always felt that it was important to know the other part of a story before opening my mouth and possibly looking stupid. I have come to terms with the fact that some of my people are perpetually ignorant, but I still have problems when we put that ignorance on display for the world to see.

==Illuminati and Stan Wars==

-

-
The Illuminati/Freemasons conspiracies have found a home in stans wars because it fits perfectly with 2 ideals of Stan Wars:

-

-
'''Ideal #1''': I Don't Have A Mind of My Own

-

-
and

-

-
'''Ideal #4:''' I See What I Want To See and Believe What I Want to Believe

-

-
It is incredibly easy to get certain people to buy into the Illuminati/Freemasons conspiracies if it's something they ''want'' to believe.  All you need is a YouTube video and you get can people to believe pretty much anything without them doing any research to prove or disprove what you tell them.

Because of the secrecy of Freemasons and the Illuminati it is widely speculated that members participated in Satanic rituals. Whether or not you believe that is your choice, but common sense says that the only people who can intelligently speak about devil worship are:

-

-
1. People who studied devil worship.

-

-
2. People who have worshiped (or used to worship) the devil.

-

-
3. People who have witnessed an actual Satanic ceremony.

-

-
Despite all of the videos and theories no one has explained exactly what a celebrity devil worshiping service consists of.

-

-
Do they meet in a church-like building but instead of worshiping a picture of White Jesus they worship this picture:

-

-
Do they sacrifice puppies?

-

-
None of these questions were directly answered by any of the conspiracy theory videos, but if everything you don't know and don't understand is apart of Satanic rituals, then that includes some celebrities, but that also includes sororities and fraternities, country clubs, and every religion other than yours. Based on the "logic" of these theories, anything and everything exclusive and mysterious could be apart of some Satanic rituals.

We have always had a strange fascination with Satanic and occult messages, even when they didn't exist. It was rumored that if you played [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUaBfrRmFMA&feature=related Prince's "Darling Nikki"] backwards you would hear a satanic message. But really what you hear is:

-

-
''"Hello. How are you? I'm fine 'cause I know that the Lord is coming soon. Coming, coming soon"''

-

-
Then there was the Three Six Mafia "''Stay High''" controversy. Your cousin Propecia told you that they were saying:

-

-
''"You are lord. You are king. Lucifer"''

-

-
As it turns out the song was sampled from [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j1cRaYMlJmQ Willie Hutch's "Tell Me Why Has Our Love Turned Cold"] which was released over 30 years earlier.

It seems our fascination with Satan has more to do us and less with celebrities. Whenever someone is a success we say they sold their soul to the devil. Why not say they sold their soul to the Lord? Our misconceptions have less to do with secret Satanic societies and more to do with our own understanding (or misunderstanding) of religion. Most people's "understanding" of Freemasonry has been dictated to them by people who don't know what they're talking about. That's not unusual since most people's understanding of religion is also dictated to them by people who don't know what they're talking about.

Buying into the Illuminati/Freemason/occult conspiracy theories gives us license to be ignorant. Most people who believed the conspiracy theory videos did so without doing any research of their own because it is what they wanted to believe. If you truly believe that only way to achieve massive success is to sell your soul to the devil it gives you license to be lazy and unmotivated. It gives you a "valid" reason to downplay other people's success and degrade people that you probably didn't like in the first place. If you stan for a flopping artist it is very convenient to believe that he or she is flopping because there is a secret group of powerful people keeping them down, not because that artist is just unpopular or untalented. If you WANT to believe that a person became successful because they sold their soul you can feel a lot better about your own failures. The thinking is "I have no money, no talent, and nobody knows me, but at least I didn't sell my soul." These conspiracy theories allow you to hate people more successful than you, perpetuate the "crab in a barrel" mentality, and claim that you are doing it all in the name of God and spiritual righteousness. All of this proves how much people (even those conspiracy theorists) subconsciously worship celebrity images. People look to celebrities for reflections of themselves. We want celebrities to speak as we would speak, date the people we would date, and express their spirituality in the way that we would. Most people are not completely secure with the lives they lead or the decisions they make unless a celebrity co-signs it.

The Illuminati conspiracy theorists say that we (as fans of secular entertainment) have become brainwashed. I've always believed that brainwashed means not having a mind of my own nor the ability to think for myself. Brainwashed means blindly accepting the unfounded opinions of others without researching it for myself. Brainwashed means letting crudely edited YouTube videos dictate my thoughts and opinions.

==Satanic Imagery in Urban Music Videos==

-

-
There's no coincidence that a lot of the artists implicated in the Illuminati conspiracies are Black artists.

-
If you are a Black entertainer and you crossover to mainstream (White) audiences then your Black fanbase may feel like you don't belong exclusively to them anymore so they will commence to bringing back down to a relatable level (See: Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson)

-

-
More often than not, if you are a Black artist no matter how world-famous you become your roots are still Black. Black radio plays your records first and BET plays your videos before MTV begins to care. Even if you crossover you must remember that  just because your artistic horizons have evolved that doesn't mean your audience has. Yes, Beyonce might be a worldwide superstar but a good portion of her fanbase still has a basic bitch mentality. Yes, people in Europe know who you are, yes Thierry Muglery wants to work with you, but you are still producing work that will be viewed by people whose frame of reference goes no further than 106 and Park. You are incorporating abstract imagery with no clear meaning. You are wearing odd-looking clothing that's not available at Citz Trendz.  Plainly put, you just can't spring random left-field shit on Black folks. Once you do this you have began confusing people and people (particularly Black people) don't like being confused.  When we are confused we try to simplify it into terms that we understand and for Black people things we don't understand fall into 2 categories:

-

-
'''1. Crazy'''

-

-
'''2. The Devil'''

-

-
If you are an urban artist and your video doesn't take place in the club, the projects, or the WIC office parking lot then you are automatically a devil worshiper (according to the experts on YouTube). You have put people in the difficult situation of being open-minded and thinking outside the narrow confines what they have previously been exposed to.

-

-
''Why is [[Beyonce]] running through a corn field?''

-

-
''Why is Jay-Z getting killed in this video?''

-

-
"Is Kanye supposed to be Jesus in this video?"

-

-
''Why is [[Rihanna]] painted silver?''

-

-
''What does this honey bun REALLY symbolize?''

-

-
"I don't understand this, so it must be crazy or the devil."

-

-
"This falls outside of my frame of reference so I'll assume that it must be apart of the Illuminati"

-

-
So as an urban artist what do you do?

-

-
Do you stop being creative?

-

-
Do you go back to videos where it's you and 50 of your cousins dancing and doing various jail poses in the background?

-

-
Do you start thanking God at every award show and cut a gospel album to appease people insecure about their own faith and spirituality?

-

-
Do you tone down your entire life and career down to satisfy those who are envious and narrow-minded?

-

-
You could, but it probably wouldn't help. At the end of the day, people will see what they want to see and believe what they want to believe despite logic and common sense to prove them wrong. That has how conspiracy theories have spread and that is why Stan Wars continue.
