Artist Bio (1994-1999)

If you were born before 1994 you may know remember her as a popular singer and actress.

She is a 1-time Grammy Award winner, and, according to Stanscan, has sold over 30 million records worldwide. She is also an occasional actress, staring in 2 TV-movies, and co-starring in the sequel to I Know What You Did the Friday After Next (or whatever the fuck it was).

She was also the star and producer of the groundbreaking sitcom "Moesha", which remains an unparalleled achievement in television writing and acting. And so, Brandy remains one of the few entertainers in history to have simultaneous success (such as it was) in movies, television, and, music.

2000 to Now

Unfortunately, Brandy did not make the transition from teenage superstar to full-fledged adult megastar.

Considering all of the child stars who become over-sexualized and exploited, her management/mother was fiercely protective of her image. Her squeaky clean persona made her an admirable role model and profitable product spokeswoman, but, from an artistic standpoint, it can be very limiting. At a certain point, you must take risks (musically and visually) for the longevity and integrity of your career. Being a "good girl" was cute up until a point, but America didn't really want a 21-year-old teenager. By time she got around to doing something remotely "adult"(See: Her spiritual union) the public had lost interest and Ashanti had stolen her thunder.

How dreadful.

A changing musical climate and several personal crises briefly curtailed her career. She continued to release music, and although none of them lived up to the sales of her first 2 albums, she has not totally disappeared. Her album "Afrodisiac" achieved critical and industry acclaim and is constantly name-dropped by the pretentious underground queens during stan war arguments. UStream, Twitter, and reality TV have allowed her to create new marketing opportunities for herself and reach her dozens of fans across the Greater Los Angeles area.

Her music has been cited as an influence by such artists as Rihanna and Jazmine Sullivan.

Frequent Brandy Stan Battles

Brandy Stans vs. Monica Stans

Comparisons between the two were inevitable, since Brandy and Monica were similar ages, were both considered "R&B", and both made their musical debut at around the same time. It was rumored that Monica snatched a fistful of those Moesha braids during rehearsals for the 1998 VMAs, but their publicists had squashed the rumors. Later, Monica claimed that Brandy put her hand in her face during a video shoot (that's exactly what got Kim choked by NeNe) and Monica stans were upset that Brandy performed "The Boy Is Mine" on the Tonight Show without Monica.

(This was pre-blog and pre-Twitter, so you had to wait for VIBE magazine to come in the mail to get all of the artist gossip and stan wars updates. )

13 years later, both women have both survived personal and professional challenges. They are both mothers, industry veterans, Beyonceitis victims, and, most importantly, friends.

I don't have the strength.

Brandy Stans vs. Beyonce Stans

Because Beyonce currently has the kind of career that Brandy stans thought Brandy had, this has caused some Brandy stans to be in a bit of a tizzy. Comparisons between the two artists are unfair. Brandy was never a renowned live performer, nor a profitable touring act. The bulk of her success as an actress was in TV movies, and mainstream media and award shows didn't really "use" Brandy in the same way they do Beyonce. At the risk of getting dragged by Beyonce stans, it is probably just best for Brandy stans to appreciate each artist for their separate and distinct talents and careers.

Stan War Strengths

  • A 5-year long span of successful music releases.
  • An undetermined amount of records sold around the world.
  • 2 TV movies
  • 1 feature film
  • Belongs in a select category of artists who have had simultaneous success in film, music, and, television.
  • Very unique vocal tone
  • Very unique vocal style
  • Very unique vocal runs
  • Very unique vocal texture
  • Very unique vocal delivery (Brandy is a very unique vocalist...I guess, would be the main bullet point of this presentation.)

Stan War Weaknesses

  • Beyonce
  • Monica
  • No Tour Receipts
  • That fender bender
  • That spiritual union
  • The stigma of being a superstar turned reality TV star
  • Singing in bathrooms (she wasn't trying to impress you haters, she was singing to her fans and both of them loved it.)
